Couch Potato Greys is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that places retired racing greyhounds in adoptive homes in the Greater Las Vegas area and beyond. Our ex-racing greyhounds come primarily from Kansas farms.
Greyhounds make wonderful pets, but a greyhound isn't for everyone. The greyhound adoption is a lifetime commitment. Some of the racing greyhounds have lived such a sheltered and regimented life, that becoming a pet is a new beginning to them. They have not been exposed to common sights and sounds found in your home and surroundings. Almost everything considered normal to you is strange to the greyhound. They will be curious, awestruck and sometimes frightened in their new environment. Some need more time to adjust than others, but with love and understanding, they adjust and blossom into a very loving companion.
Male greyhounds are usually 26-30 inches at the shoulder and weigh 65 lbs and up. Females are usually 23-26 inches at the shoulder and weigh 50-65 lbs. With proper care, they can live to be 12-15 years old. Greyhounds rarely bark, are not very territorial, and do not make good watchdogs.
Because of their love to run and chase things, their getting along with an indoor cat or small animal may totally change once they get outside. They have been bred for centuries to chase, and cannot be expected to change even with obedience training. Because of this greyhounds can NEVER be trusted off leash except in a completely enclosed fenced yard.
To most peoples surprise, greyhounds do not require constant exercise, but a fenced in yard for romping to burn off excess energy is nice, not a requirement. They are creatures that have adapted to someones daily schedule. Just remember when they need to go out in January at minus temperatures, and you are sick, they will still have to be let out on a lead.
